Customers on Belah Fellowship Water System, East Jena Water System and Summerville Rosefield Water Systems have Servline Leak Loss Insurance which will cover up to $1,000.00 if you have a leak that has been fixed that goes to your home. Customers that have a > next to their name on their bills have opted out of the insurance and do not have coverage. If you decide to get the insurance after opting out you can call 318-316-5438 and request to be reinstated and after thirty days you will be covered again. Leaks that start before meter is read and then are fixed after meter is read can turn in a claim for both month's high bill since the leak spanned over a two month cycle. The phone number to call to report a claim is 318-374-8263. System bookkeeper will be contacted to get a 12 month billing report to arrive at your average bill and that part you will have to pay. Any questions call 318-316-5438.
1) If you are able to go to your meter and get the reading, compare it to the last reading on your water bill. If the reading on your meter is lower that the last reading on your water bill that would indicate the the meter was read wrong and you should call your billing office and report your findings. We can then have the meter reread and and if he gets the same lower reading then billing office will recalculate the daily usage for the correct number of days and send you a revised bill. If the reading on the meter is higher than the last reading on your bill then subtract your last reading on your bill from your current reading on your meter and that will give you the amount of water that has gone thru your meter since the meter was read last by the meter reader. If it is higher than normal usage then you may have a leak.
2) Turn everything off in your house and go to your meter and on older meters check to see if the small dial (tattle tail) is turning, on a new digital meters check the last two digits after the decimal to see if they are turning. If so water is going thru your meter somewhere. You may have a leak in in your line between your meter and your home or you may have something like a commode leaking or possibly an auto water feeder in a cattle trough hung up, etc. If there is a leak in the line between your meter and your home it may surface to the top of the ground but not always. There have been several cases where leaks did not surface and was leaking underground. These leaks are sometimes hard to find.
3) If you had high water bill the prior month and after reading your meter and comparing it to the last reading on your bill and the usage per day was back to normal then it would be apparent that something unusual happened during the prior month such as a hose or hydrant being left on by mistake or a auto feeder in a cattle trough hung up and then went back to working properly, etc.
4) The meter is there for the purpose of recording your usage of water each month. The first response a lot of times is that there is something wrong with the meter. Water going thru the meter is what make the dials turn. In years of doing billing for water systems I have only seen one or two meters that were actually recording improperly. Usually if a meter does fail it doesn't go back to reading properly. In some cases Water Systems have added a second meter behind your existing meter for a month or two just to see if both meters read the same which if they do would tell us that there is nothing wrong with the original meter.
